Ray Bidegain and Susan DeWitt Recognized For “Outstanding Work” In 2022 Denis Roussel Award Competition

Denis Roussel was taken from us too soon by cancer, so an award for historical/alternative processes was created in his memory. The Juror for the 2022 Denis Roussel Award, Christopher James, the person who literally “wrote the book” on alternative photographic processes. In addition to spending much time responding to the images, he also provided very personal reactions and potential directions for new work.

Mr. James noted, “Photography today is deeply integrated into every aspect of our lives and cultures and its heartbeat, the one that each of us hears beating in our soul, is driven by a need to make sense of the time we are living in … and our unsatiated curiosity to see how good we can be doing what we love.”

Two Portland Photographers’ Forum members, Susan DeWitt, and Ray Bidegain were honored for their creative use of the polymer photogravure process. Below, on the left, is Susan’s “As My Dream Unfolds”, and on the right, is Ray’s “A Leap.”
