Get To Know: Dayanita Singh

Imagine being female in India, reaching 18 years of age. Looking at the many social expectations that are applied to all, automatically, could cause one to feel trapped, or imprisoned. Longing for an escape route, Dayanita Singh determined that being a photographer might just be the only way.

Her photography centers on social issues in India, such as child labor, poverty, sex workers. For those not close to such things, her images open the door. She exhibits all over the world, and has been invited to the Venice Biennale twice. She thinks deeply, reaches interesting conclusions, and writes well about them in her online blog, Random Thoughts On Photography, Art, And Being A Soloist.
