Inspiration: 119 Year Old Glass Plate Reveals The Orion Nebula

In 1901, astronomer George Richey made a 50-minute exposure using a 24-in telescope (stopped down to 18 inches to improve focus) to expose a glass photographic plate sensitive to blue and green light. Those ancient plates can still be used for research. This image was featured in NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day last year.
