Get To Know: Conceptual Artist Lorna Simpson
Lorna Simpson studied photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York and the University of California, San Diego. Even before she officially graduated, her reputation as a conceptual photographer was well-known. She tends to work large scale to challenge the current standards of gender, culture, identity, memory, and history.
Figures may be hard to identify, text may be involved, thin ink washes may be used to isolate certain areas, images may be printed on felt. She also works in painting, sculpture, collage, film and video. Her works have been exhibited internationally and are in the collections of several galleries and art centers. She received the J. Paul Getty Medal in 2019.
