Get To Know: Charlie Phillips

If you had produced photos of Jimi Hendrix and Mohammad Ali that sold all over the world, and had a fan base that included the likes of Frederico Fellini and Henri Cartier-Bresson, you might think you would be well-known in your own lifetime. Not so for Jamacian-born Charlie Phillips.

According to a report on Jamacians.com, Mr. Phillips moved with his family to the Notting Hill neighborhood of West London when he was eleven. His African-Caribbean upbringing helped him to gain acceptance with the many immigrants in that area, and also to produce great documentary photographs. Galleries recognized him with exhibitions in the Museum of the City of New York, the Tate Britain, Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit, and the Museum of London .
