Ouka Leele, Iconoclastic Spanish Photographer, Died At Age 64

Spanish photographer, Ouka Leele, died on Tuesday, May 24, 2022. She was 64. Born Bárbara Allende Gil de Biedma, she was well known for her creativity in photography and poetry. She was represented by Galerie VU'.

She worked through the Spanish cultural revolution which also included a feminine revolution. Once the Franco regime fell, conditions changed dramatically, and her work in the Movida period was considered to be somewhat subversive. In the late 1970 through the early 1980s, she made large black and white prints. From these prints, she made full color paintings, working mostly in watercolors, which were then photographed and printed in large format. In a way, the finished products were a hybrid of photography and painting.
