Get To Know: Ten Pivotal Australian Photo Exhibitions

Writing in the September 3, 2021 Friday Essay, Professors Daniel Palmer and Martyn Jolly described ten Australian exhibitions of photography that they claimed defined Australian life. The ten ranged from Daguerrotypes in 1848 to billboards in 2019. The one that caught my eye was the National Aboriginal and Islander Photographers Exhibition, in1986.

This was the first major exhibition in which the Aboriginal people made decisions about their own photographs. Ten photographers participated, among them Mervyn Bishop, Brenda L. Croft, Michael Riley, and Tracey Moffatt.
